Bill on speeding fines would violate Constitution

The Gazette reported Jan. 13 about a bill introduced in the state legislature that would require the town of Ridgeland to repay fines paid by drivers caught speeding by camera.

The proponents should read the U.S. Constitution, which prevents "ex post facto" laws (a law passed after the occurrence of an act).

Regardless of how you feel about cameras catching speeders, the issue cannot be dealt with in this way.
