Bankruptcy admission no disgrace for candidate

Tom Crews, a candidate for mayor of Hilton Head Island, has revealed in the course of his campaign that he filed for bankruptcy more than 20 years ago.

I want to commend him for his openness and point out that he is in good company: Henry Ford, H.J. Heinz, Thomas Jefferson, Walt Disney, Larry King, Abraham Lincoln, Milton Hershey, P.T. Barnum, Rembrandt, Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) and Wally Amos of Famous Amos Cookies all filed bankruptcy at one time in their careers.

All too often people in business are criticized for failing when they should be applauded for trying. To fail is not a bad thing. To do nothing is. We need to encourage people to step out and make a difference. That is the way things get better, even if we fail in some things along the way.
