Staff, volunteers, voters earn thanks for efforts

Because of the lateness of the election returns, I wasn't able to properly thank the thousands of voters who took time to participate in our democracy.

Congratulations to Doug Henderson on his victory. I will work closely with him in the coming months to ensure a smooth transition.

I have been blessed to serve with an outstanding and highly qualified staff. With their help, we have earned statewide honors for improvements, such as online tax payments, credit card payments, the installment payment plan for property taxes and our work with heirs property. We also averaged a 98 percent tax collection rate, which is pretty amazing in the down economy. And we did it all in-house.

For 20 years, I have dedicated my life's work to Beaufort County, always with the goal of making this corner of heaven just a little brighter. Sometimes I succeeded and sometimes I failed, but never without trying. During one of my worst times, when an employee was accused of embezzling and my husband was dying, it was this job, this county and my staff who kept me focused.

To my supporters, thank you for your devotion and compassion. I appreciate all your hard work, and I will forever remember your kindness during my husband's sickness and passing.

To the residents of Beaufort County, I pledge my continued dedication and hard work as we close out the fiscal year between now and June 30. Thank you for the opportunity to serve you for the past 20 years.
