Keep port waterfront in the public's hands

An open letter to Gov. Mark Sanford and the S.C. State Ports Authority: There is no right way to do a wrong thing. It is wrong to sell the Port of Port Royal property that taxpayers purchased. It should be transferred to the state Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism for a marina and waterfront activities to benefit taxpayers. Squabbling over who has the political connections to purchase and develop the property for profit is short-sighted. Do the right thing first with a waterfront park, and any inland property then could be sold at a premium because of its proximity to the park. The Beaufort County Open Land Trust can attest to the fact that views like these are increasingly hard to preserve. The beach at the Hunting Island State Park is rapidly eroding, and a state park at Port Royal could serve both locals and visitors for decades to come. Dave Zanone Fripp Island
