This is a day to be proud to be from Beaufort. Today marks the beginning of the Beaufort Water Festival, a 10-day celebration of good times in the Lowcountry.
Commodore Bob Bible chose a fitting theme: "56 Years of Tradition, 300 Years of History." It shows how deeply rooted the Water Festival is as the city reaches the 300th anniversary of its charter.
The festival will again feature competitions on land and sea, a ski show, teen dance, Motown Monday, Tropical Tuesday, talent show, Lowcountry supper, bed race, river dance, blessing of the fleet, art and craft market, parade, Pirettes, the Commodore's Ball and more.
But Bob and Colleen Bible represent perhaps the greatest contribution of the festival: its volunteerism, community teamwork, and multi-generational gatherings that help people get to know each other and their hometown better. Bon voyage.
