Hilton Head Island Fire & Rescue Division may be evacuating the island depending on the strength of the storm.
Chief Brad Tadlock says the fire departments cannot all withstand the winds, flooding and storm surge associated with a Category 2 or 3 hurricane. The division will relocate for an expected Cat 3, and may relocate as well for an expected Cat 2.
If some personnel stay behind, it will be to provide very limited service, Tadlock says, and not during the storm.
If all personnel relocate, there will be no further fire and rescue service to the island until they return.
