Why can’t evacuees access I-26 to Columbia right now?

The South Carolina Highway Patrol has closed access to I-26 heading westbound to Columbia from I-95.

Lance Cpl. Gary Miller said the main route used by Beaufort County evacuees to get to the Columbia area has been closed to keep traffic flowing toward Columbia. He said I-26 also is being used by people evacuating from Charleston.

“We are trying to get people out of there and if you put them together in one place they are going to bottleneck,” Miller said.

Those traveling on I-95 can use I-20 as an alternative route, Miller said.

There is no information at this time on when the access to I-26 from I-95 will be reopened. Call South Carolina Department of Transportation to check on the road’s accessibility, 1-855-467-2368.
