Columbia sets National Youth Violence Prevention events

“Choose Peace/Stop Violence” is the theme of this year’s National Youth Violence Prevention Week, April 6-11.

The city of Columbia’s planned events include:

Light Up the Night for Peace: 5 p.m. Sunday at Finlay Park, 930 Laurel St. Candlelight vigil and memorial calling for an end to the youth violence in our city. Hear from victims and families affected by youth violence.

Violence Prevention Fair: 6 p.m. Monday at the Earlewood Park Community Center on Parkside Drive. Dozens of agencies and organizations will be on hand to provide information on programs, resources, activities and events available to youth.

Man in the Mirror – Youth Panel: 6 p.m. Wednesday at Columbia City Hall, 1737 Main St. Panel will feature The Insiders, a group of juveniles who travel throughout the state encouraging troubled children and promoting community awareness of the prevalence and consequences of juvenile crime.

Game On! – A Night of Non-Violence: 6-11 p.m. April 11. City parks and community centers will operate on extended hours so that youth may engage in positive activities. Go to http://columbiasc.net/parks-recreation for locations.
