Hazing incident involving high school baseball team investigated, NC sheriff says
An over-the-top hazing event involving members of a high school baseball team is under investigation in southeastern North Carolina, according to deputies.
The suspects are students at Fairmont High School in Robeson County, about a 110-mile drive southwest from downtown Raleigh.
“On Monday, February 23, 2026, the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office Special Victims Unit initiated an investigation into allegations of hazing involving members of the Fairmont High School baseball team,” the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office said in a March 26 news release.
“The reported incident occurred on a Public Schools of Robeson County activity bus following a game against 71st High School. During the course of the investigation, investigators determined that the incident began in Cumberland County and continued into Robeson County.”
Specific details of the incident have not been released, including the number of students involved and whether anyone was hurt.
On Monday, March 23, Special Victims Unit investigators met with the Robeson County District Attorney’s Office to review the evidence, the sheriff’s office said. The investigators also met with school district administrators to update them on the case, officials said.
At the conclusion of the meetings, the sheriff’s office announced it was referring the investigation to the N.C. State Bureau of Investigation.
The Charlotte Observer contacted the Public Schools of Robeson County for comment and district officials said they “are yielding all comments to the investigating authority.”
Fairmont High has about 800 students in grades 9 through 12, according to USNews.com.
