Beaufort County school board member Jim Beckert secured the Republican nomination for county auditor in Tuesday's primary election.

The win likely secures the office for Beckert, who so far faces no opposition in November's general election.

Beckert defeated George Wright, a software programmer for the county, by a 15-point margin, securing more than 5,200 of the 9,036 votes cast in the race, according to election results from the South Carolina Election Commission.

The next county auditor will replace Sharon Burris, who has held the post for 27 years and will retire when her term ends next year.

Both candidates want to improve the office's use of technology to make it more efficient and user-friendly for taxpayers.

Expanding staff training and offering additional office hours at the auditor's three offices -- in Beaufort, Bluffton and on Hilton Head Island -- were priorities for both.

Beckert also wants to audit county tax rolls by cross-referencing records the county already keeps with information from the auditor's, assessor's and treasurer's offices, he has said.

Reached Tuesday night, Beckert said he was happy with the win.

Attempts to reach Wright Tuesday night were unsuccessful.

Beckert currently holds the Beaufort County Board of Education District 4 seat, which is up for re-election this fall.

Filing for school district seats, which are nonpartisan, is open until Aug. 15.
