Former mayor's task force chairman endorses Laughlin

David Ames, former chairman of the Mayor's Task Force for the Island's Future and chairman of the board of the Children's Center, has endorsed Drew Laughlin for mayor of Hilton Head Island.

Laughlin, who represents Ward 3 on Town Council, is among seven vying to replace Mayor Tom Peeples in the Nov. 2 nonpartisan general election. Peeples is not seeking reelection after 15 years in office.

"Drew is the mayoral candidate with the broadest experience and is the most qualified to lead the town's efforts to protect and enhance our community's quality of life, stimulate our economy and make Hilton Head Island a refuge from the commonplace," Ames said in a statement Friday.

Other mayoral candidates include Tom Crews, an architect; Ed McCullough, co-founder of Swipe4Charities; Jim Collett, retiree and former chairman of the town's Board of Zoning Appeals; Ward 4 Town Councilman John Safay; Ward 1 Town Councilman Bill Ferguson; and Dave Myers, part-owner of laser manufacturer Kigre Inc.
