Three other people were transported to local hospitals, according to Randy Hunter of the Bluffton Township Fire District. Their names and conditions were not available from law enforcement.
According to SC Highway Patrol Cpl. Sonny Collins, a westbound Subaru crossed the center line and struck a Honda van and a Ford van. The Suburu driver, who was not wearing a seat belt, was killed in the collision. All three injured people were in the Honda van.
No one in the Ford van required hospitalization, Collins said.
Because the Highway Patrol's investigation determined the Subaru was the at-fault vehicle and the driver is deceased, no charges will be filed in the incident.
The crash closed both U.S. 278 eastbound lanes to traffic for several hours as emergency personnel worked to clear the scene, according to Capt. Randy Hunter of the Bluffton Township Fire District.
The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office began rerouting traffic in both directions of the bridge's westbound lanes shortly after 6 p.m., and did not clear the scene until about 9 p.m., Capt. Bob Bromage said. At that time, traffic was backed up to Tanger Outlets 1, he said.
