A town of Bluffton contractor will remove and replace a diseased oak tree at Tom Herbkersman Commons -- the area near the four-way stop on Bluffton Road -- requiring closure of the right-hand lane and sidewalks on Saturday and Dec. 20.
The closures will be from Bluffton Road to May River Road. A crane to remove the laurel oak will be set up in the right-hand lane, Rooney said.
Patrick Rooney, the Town of Bluffton's principal planner, said three independent arborists determined the tree threatens public safety and will die within a few years.
A 30-foot-tall, 12-inch-thick live oak will be planted to replace it.
