Firefighters were called to a blaze the evening of June 30, 2014, at the former Great American Cleaners on Palmetto Bay Road on Hilton Head Island. Firefighters responded about 5 p.m. to find the building’s roof consumed by flames, said Hilton Head Fire and Rescue spokeswoman Joheida Fister. By about 6:30 p.m., they had the fire under control, but not before part of the roof collapsed, Fister said. Traffic was closed on Palmetto Bay Road while crews worked to contain and extinguish the fire.
