Attention, drivers to Savannah! Here’s why Houlihan Bridge is closed
The Houlihan Bridge, a route into Savannah, will be closed until further notice with no timeline for its re-opening, according to authorities.
The bridge is need of repairs after being inspected by the Georgia Department of Transportation, a release from the agency said.
A 23-mile detour has been established for traffic while repairs are made, it said.
Drivers in South Carolina who would normally take S.C. 170 toward the Houlihan Bridge are now encouraged to head north on U.S. 17 to south I-95 and turn onto Georgia Route 21, according to GADOT.
On the other side of the river, the agency said drivers should use Bonnybridge Road to Route 21 and cross into South Carolina on S.C. 170.
The James P. Houlihan Bridge was completed in 1930 and widened in 1954, according to the Georgia Historic Bridge Survey.
The bridge closed as recently as last year due to a mechanical failure.
The most recent inspection of the Houlihan Bridge in 2018 found it to be in fair condition and meeting minimum requirements though minor safety updates were needed.
