Three separate accidents within five minutes during the height of evening rush hour in Bluffton backed up traffic in several areas along U.S. 278 Friday.
The first accident involving two vehicles occurred just after 5 p.m. at U.S. 278 near Buckwalter Parkway, according to Capt. Lee Levesque of the Bluffton Township Fire District. No injuries were reported.
The accident caused a “grass fire” that spread to the utility pole and killed power on the traffic light, Levesque said. According to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office, the right and center westbound lanes of U.S. 278 near Buckwalter Parkway were blocked around 5 p.m.
Traffic was starting to clear around 5:45 p.m. according to traffic cameras.
Minutes later, a motorcycle accident on U.S. 278 and Buck Island Road occurred. Just after that, a “minor” accident involving an SUV and a Honda car blocked traffic near Bluffton Road and U.S. 278, Levesque said.
Only minor injuries were reported, according to Levesque. Details on how many people were injured in the accidents were not immediately available.
