Traffic was backed up along U.S. 278 after a minor crash not far from the bridges onto Hilton Head Island on Wednesday afternoon.
The two-car crash in the westbound lanes of U.S. 278 happened around 5:20 p.m. and didn’t result in any injuries, Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office Capt. Bob Bromage said. The cars were moved off the road onto the shoulder and didn’t block any lanes of traffic, he said. At about 6 p.m., the crash was expected to clear soon.
Even though no lanes were blocked, off-island traffic backed up on William Hilton Parkway and the Cross Island Parkway, Beaufort County traffic cameras showed.
The traffic stretched approximately 3 miles from a point not far from the bridges to about Blue Heron Point, a South Carolina Department of Transportation real-time traffic map showed.
A project approved by the Hilton Head Planning Commission on Wednesday would widen U.S. 278 from four to six lanes on Jenkins Island — a 1.05-mile tract from the foot of the J. Wilton Graves Bridge to the causeway onto Hilton Head.
