My niece Maria Ghys is a landscape architect with the Witmer-Jones-Keefer firm in The Promenade. Her friend and co-worker, Jonathan Warner, recently had an art exhibit at The Florence, an upscale Italian restaurant in Savannah. Maria invited me, my daughter Tat and my sister Catherine to the exhibit. We were thrilled by his creations.
Jonathan has many interests. He has just taken a position as a project manager with the New York Restoration Project. He and his team will work in all five boroughs of the city to transform abandoned and blighted spaces into community assets. The team traveled through parts of the city rarely seen by most residents.
Jonathan is also an ultra marathon man and has run several 50-mile races and two 100-mile races. One of the longer races was the Western States Endurance Run, the oldest 100-mile run in the world.
As if all that wasn't enough, he's an accomplished baker in his spare time. He and his little pitbull mix, Frida, which he rescued earlier this year, have set off on a wonderful new adventure. We know it will be spectacular.

Have you ever been on a wacky diet?
There's a charming new book -- "I'll Have What She's Having" by Rebecca Harrington -- lists celebrities and famous people and their quirky eating habits.
One of my children was on the Master Cleanse bandwagon for a time. It consists of not eating but drinking a combination of water, lemons, cayenne pepper and grade-B maple syrup. Heaven help you if the syrup isn't grade B. I know because I tried several times to get away with another sort. It did work, but it tasted ghastly. Beyonce and Naomi Campbell swear by it.
Elizabeth Taylor ate tuna salad mixed with tomato paste, grapefruit, scallions and mayonnaise.
Greta Garbo had a "pep" breakfast made of orange juice mixed with two raw eggs.
Victoria Beckham is on the Five Hands Diet, eating only five handfuls of food a day.
The book is fun and might give you some ideas on diets you have never tried or it might make you head for the nearest Chick-Fil-A.
AN EMPTY SPOT
We have an empty spot at the corner of Calhoun and Bridge streets.
For many years, the space was the home of the Messex Filling Station. When Mr. Messex retired, and Reggie took over from his father, Messex' moved to May River Road next to Jeffrey Robinowich's.
Next came Calhoun Station, a wonderful thrift shop that was happily ensconced there for several years.
Calhoun Station soon outgrew the spot and found a new home in back of the Bluffton Town Hall.
Twenty-five or so years ago, the building became Eggs'n'tricities. Nancy Golson and her partner of sorts Patsy Hodge held court there, dishing out bon mots and the latest ladies jewels and fashion. Nancy was also running out of room and decided to look for a new spot. She hit the jackpot. Right down the road and around the corner on Lawton Street sat Paul and Lucille Pinckney's vacant house.
Now "Eggs" is alive and well and all tucked in. I wish those walls could talk because Paul Pinckney was one of the best storytellers around.
For the time being the corner of Calhoun and Bridge streets is a little out of kilter.
