A student from St. Helena Island has been chosen for a National Merit $2,500 Scholarship.
Madison M. Maddox, who attends the S.C. Governor's School for Science and Mathematics in Hartsville, received the award, which is funded by the National Merit Scholarship Corp.
The designees were chosen from more than 15,000 finalists. The winners are the finalists in each state judged to have the strongest combination of accomplishments, skills and potential for success in college studies, according to a news release.
