North of the Broad Class Notes for July 22



  • All in-coming freshmen are encouraged to attend a daylong orientation session 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. Aug. 6. Lunch and bus service will be provided. Students should wear their school uniform.There will also be a separate orientation presentation for new students and their parents or guardians at 6 p.m. Aug. 15 at the school's McVey Performing Arts Center. Parents/guardians and students should plan to visit the teachers in their classrooms following the orientation presentation. Call Diane Grooms at 843-322-5582 for more information or to register.
  • Any student interested in being a part of the 2013 Girls Golf Team should contact coach Bailey at 843-263-5865 or Sports physicals will be given on 9-11 a.m. July 27. Sports physical forms are available in the front office of Battery Creek High School.
  • All parents and guardian of band members are invited to attend a planning session of the school's Band Booster Club at 5:30 p.m. July 27 in the BCHS Band Room. Details: Wendell Roberson,
  • The cheerleading squad will hold tryouts Aug. 5-7 in the gym. Tryout times will be 9-11 a.m. All students trying out must have a current South Carolina Physical Form on file with the athletic department. Details: Coach Williams, 843-322-5500.


  • The school will offer a "British Soccer Camp" by Challenger Sports the week of Aug. 5 for those ages 3-18 years old. Each day of the camp includes individual foot skills, technical drills, tactical practices, small-sided games, coached scrimmages and a daily tournament. The camp is open to the public.
  • The school will also offer an SAT Prep Class 8:30 a.m.-1 p.m. the week of Aug. 9 Cost is $350 and includes a copy of the Princeton Sat Prep Book for each student. Students can register online at by clicking the Camp Eagle icon, or drop off checks at the school's main office, which is open 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Friday.



  • The school recently appointed Laura Lopresto-McKeown as its new educational director. Lopresto-McKeown is a certified Montessori teacher with 15 years of experience in Beaufort, Charleston, and Clemson


  • 2013 graduate Madison Summerill was recently awarded a $1,000 scholarship from WinnCompanies, which provides property management and maintenance services at Atlantic Marine Corps Communities at Tri-Command. Summerill will attend the College of Charleston this fall. Summerill and her parents, Master Gunnery Sgt. FK Summerill and his wife, Toni, have lived with Atlantic Marine Corps Communities at Tri-Command since July 2010.
