  • The Leadership Beaufort Alumni Association will host a panel discussion called "County School Choices and Funding: Why Parents Want Choices and How They Are Funded" at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Holiday Inn Beaufort on Boundary Street. The event will include discussion of the Beaufort County School District's efforts to increase the diversity of its academic offerings by providing traditional schools, magnet programs, schools of choice and Riverview Charter School.   • Students in kindergarten through seventh grade are invited to participate in the Beaufort County School District's free virtual summer school program. Students can work on individual areas of need or prepare for the coming school year by using a Web-based tool during eight weeks this summer. Students will complete CompassLearning sequences in math and language arts for each week of summer school. The program will be available June 13 through Aug. 5. Registration is available at


  • The annual school picnic will be at 5 p.m. Wednesday.


  • PTO will be held at 5 p.m. and SIC at 6 p.m. Tuesday in the media center.
  • Parents are invited to watch seventh-grade students summarize their school year and announce their accomplishments from 8:30-10 a.m. Wednesday in the cafeteria.
  • Yearbooks will be distributed at the "Yearbook Signing Party" Thursday in the cafeteria. Yearbooks are on sale for $40. At the party, the purchase price will be $45.
  • The End-of-the-Year Cookout will be held during lunches Friday. Grilled chicken, burgers, hot dogs and barbecue will be served along with corn on the cob and baked beans. Prices are $1.85 for students and $3.15 for adults. Reservations are required.
  • The strings and band will have concerts at 6 p.m. Friday in the cafeteria.
  • The sixth grade awards ceremony will be at 7:30 a.m. June 6 in the gym.
  • The seventh grade awards ceremony will be at 7:30 a.m. June 8 in the gym.

  • Tuesdays are our "Eat Out for Bluffton Middle Nights" at Giuseppi's and Cheeburger Cheeburger. Eat out on a Tuesday night at either restaurant and let them know you are from Bluffton Middle School.
  • Nurse Meg Hendy headed up the service project to collect pop tops to help provide free dental work for our community. The school collected more than 50 pounds of pop tops this semester and more than 90 pounds for the year. The top three path classes to donate this semester were: Ms. Downing's class (with 22<2009>1/2 pounds), Ms. Alaimo's class and Ms. Wiedeman's clASS.

  • The student store will be open this week and next week only.
  • Art teacher Ms. Tobia is teaching "Kids N' Clay Camp" from July 5-8 at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina on Hilton Head Island. Children ages 6-12 can attend. Cost is $100, and there are two different session times. Details: Tobia, You must register through the Arts Center by going to

  • Ninth-grade biology end of course exams tests are Tuesday.
  • Ninth-grade physical science end of course exams are Wednesday.
  • Final exams and makeups for end of course exams are Thursday through June 8.
  • The eighth-grade moving-up ceremonies are June 7. Teams 1 and 2 will convene at 8:30 a.m. in the gymnasium, and teams 3 and 4 will hold their ceremonies at 10:30 a.m., also in the gymnasium.

  • The fifth-graders will present their Exhibition projects to the school, parents and community members Wednesday and Thursday. Contact any fifth-grade teacher for details.

  • The fifth-grade luncheon will be held on June 6 in the Red Cafè.

  • Advanced Photography students will display their work through Tuesday at the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina.

  • The school is accepting donations of gently used uniform shirts or bottoms and belts; SAT or ACT review guides; AP study guides; or summer reading books. Items can be dropped off at the office.


  • The eighth-grade celebration will be held at 6 p.m. June 6 at the Hilton Head Island High School Stadium. Students are to report to their homeroom teachers at 5:15 p.m. The dance will follow at the middle school cafeteria from 7-10 p.m. The pancake breakfast will be held June 9 in the cafeteria.

  • Keep turning in your box tops to your homeroom teacher or the main office. The school receives 10 cents for each box top turned in. You can turn them in all year.
  • Eighth-grade parents, Hilton Head Island High School is looking for candidates for the upcoming year's Student Improvement Council. This is an elected position. Those interested should fill out the nomination ballot available at the front office. Details: Roberta Foss,

  • Eighth-grade students received a high school orientation letter and a registration form in homeroom. The two-day program is for all rising ninth-graders and will include numerous activities to help students transition from middle school to high school. Return the registration forms to Mrs. Wheatley by June 8 to participate in the worthwhile program.


  • Lower school students were recognized for their accomplishments at the school's closing assembly on May 25, 2011. Recipients of the Three R's Award (Respect for Self, Respect for Others, Respect for Community) were junior kindergartner Nicholas Marotta, kindergartner Abby Peduzzi, first-graders Ashlyn Parsick and Ashley Wilmot, second-graders Paul Carrabba and Julia Willey, third-graders Stone McDonald and Will Woerheide, fourth-graders Drew Askeland and Henry Clare Cram, and fifth-graders Alana McCallion and Kylie Stewart. Recipients of the Continental Math League Awards were third-graders Lainey Hicks, first place; Kierstin Clark, second place; Sophia Nimmer and Will Woerheide, fourth-graders Lizzie Rankin, first place; Collin Tardio, second place; Matthew Kandel, Natalie Middleton, Ben Pellicci and Michael Santorum; fifth-graders Kylie Stewart, first place; Alex Braden and Kacy Jones, second place (tie); Julia Gigante and Madison Welsh, fourth place (tie); and Nicole Sister, sixth place. The winner of the Amber McElhaney Reading Award was fifth-grader Liza Parinova. Honored with the Dedication to Reading award were fifth-graders Abigail Barker, Kacy Jones, Olivia Mitchell, Madison Welsh and Daisy Woerheide. The Peg Bassett Writing Award was presented to fifth-grader Julia Gigante. The Writing Excellence Award was given to fifth-grader Nicole Sister. The recipient of the Nancy Biel Science Award was fifth-grader Noah Corbitt. Fifth-grade student Hayden Garniewicz was honored with the Dolphin Spirit Award.

  • Summer camp for primary and elementary students will be July 25 to Aug. 5.


  • There is no school today, in observation of the Memorial Day holiday.
  • The school's international festival begins at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday with a parade of countries. Students will march around the front parking lot in costumes and carrying flags of their chosen country. During this week-long event, students will learn more about their chosen country's geography, history, and culture. Also, musicals have been scheduled for 10 a.m., 2 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Classes will perform songs and dances representative of their chosen country. The celebration will end Friday with 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. "festival of countries" ceremonies. These community events will feature games, crafts and food that relate to the customs of the countries of study. Also, a cakewalk will be held.
  • A fifth-grade recognition ceremony will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday. Walter Wheeler will be the guest speaker. Honor roll students and Rotary Students of the Year will be announced, and the school chorus will sing "Showing Us the Way."
  • The school's end-of-year assembly will be at 9:30 a.m. Thursday. Parents and students are invited.


  • Come dig for worms, see what you can catch with a seine net, crab or cast a shrimp net. The Sunset Science beach study will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Fish Haul Creek Park. Be sure to wear a bathing suit and old shoes. Don't forget to bring a towel.
  • The book fair is this week and will be open late Thursday.
  • Students will taste a variety of home-grown veggies, plucked from their own "Okie Acres" garden, on Wednesdsay. Students grew these vegetables from seed.
  • Thursday is "Water Day" for pre-kindergarten and ECSE.
  • The end-of-year picnic is 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday. Students can find out who their teacher will be for the next school year.
  • Field day is Friday.
  • The WINGS ceremony is Friday. Grades 1 and 2 will convene at 9 a.m., and grades 3 and 4 will meet at 2 p.m.
  • The fifth-grade moving-up ceremony is 9 a.m. Tuesday.
  • Kindergarten graduation is 9 a.m. Wednesday.
  • Report cards go home Wednesday and students will be dismissed at 12:30 p.m.


  • The Booster Club's "Reel in the Redfish" public fishing tournament and music festival will be held today at Shelter Cove Marina. Details:
  • Spirit Day is every Friday. Students can wear Sea Pines Montessori logo clothing to school.
  • A private ceremony for the eighth-grade graduates will be at 6 p.m. Thursday. A schoolwide family potluck picnic will take place afterward at 6:30 p.m. on the back porches and playground. Please bring a dish and family place settings.
  • There will be a "Daddy/Mommy & Me" class from 9-10 a.m. or 2:30-3:30 p.m. June 7. Reservations are required by Friday. This class is for SPMA families as well as families in the community with children ages 12 months to 2 years old. Details: 843-785-2534

  • The school is collecting books for Tanzania during May. Bring in any gently used or new books. Place books in donation baskets in the school foyer.

  • The Middle School students will be handing out educational materials about Hilton Head Island beaches at Coligny Beach Park at 10 a.m. Thursday.

  • Kindergarten graduation will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday in the gym.
  • The last Eucharistic Procession of the school year will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday beginning in the church.
  • Inductions into the Beta Club for the 2011-12 school year will take place at 1 p.m. Thursday in the gym.
  • There will be a school assembly/awards presentation program at 2 p.m. Thursday in the gym.
  • Talent Show will be at 1:15 p.m. Thursday in the gymnasium.
  • There will be a school Mass at 8:30 a.m. Friday, followed by field day, the moving up ceremony at 10:45 a.m. and dismissal at 11:30 a.m. Report cards will be distributed at dismissal time.

  • The Beta Club is working on a service project titled "Change for Change." They are asking students to bring in their pocket change to collect money for organizations that help those in need.
