Youth orchestra forms new strings ensemble

Violinists, violists, cellists and bassists are wanted for the Beaufort Youth Orchestra's newest ensemble.

First Orchestra will give young strings players a chance to perform in an ensemble. Those who have at least one year of experience in school or through private lessons are welcome.

The first session will be 4 p.m. March 16. At the end of April, the group will perform "Star Wars" music and two other pieces in two concerts.

Students invited to plan youth conference

A Beaufort County Youth Conference planning session will be at 11 a.m. March 19 at the Technical College of the Lowcountry. The session is open to the county's middle and high school students.

  • The Athletics Booster Club will meet at 6 p.m. today in the cafeteria.
  • The Winter Sports Athletic Ceremony is at 6:30 p.m. Thursday. A dinner will be served by the Booster Club. Athletes, coaches and club members eat free. Others must pay $5 for the meal.
  • The School Improvement Council will meet Thursday in the media center.
  • Members of the Class of 2011 should bring college acceptance letters to Mr. Richardson in guidance.
  • SADD Club cookbooks are on sale for $10. Order forms are available in the front office. The club also is selling Shamrocks for MDA for $1 through the month of March. Details: 843-322-5580
  • The BCHS PTSO is having a membership drive. Forms are available in the front office. Dues are $5 a person or $10 a family.

  • A session for grandparents raising grandchildren will be at 6 p.m. March 15 at Beaufort Elementary School. Child care will be provided.

  • The BHS track team will sponsor a spaghetti dinner from 6-9 p.m. Thursday at the school. Tickets may be purchased in advance from track athletes. Cost is $5.
  • The Booster Club is accepting donations for a yard sale to support BHS athletes. Donations may be dropped off at the Lady's Island-St. Helena Fire District, 237 Sea Island Parkway.   • McTeacher Night is from 5-7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Lady's Island McDonalds. Lady's Island Elementary staff will take orders and help cook meals.
  • The Lego Club meets at 3:45 p.m. Wednesday in the art room.
  • A stacking meet against Mossy Oaks Elementary will be at 6 p.m. Thursday in the school cafeteria.
  • A River of Words art reception will be from 5-7 p.m. Friday at ArtWorks.

  • A Pizza Inn Dough Raiser will be 5-8 p.m. Tuesday. Proceeds will go to Relay for Life.
  • Baseball and softball games will be Tuesday at Whale Branch Middle and Friday at H.E. McCracken Middle.
  • A track meet at Beaufort Middle School will be at 4:30 p.m. Wednesday.
  • The S.C. Alternate Assessment will be given today through April 29.

  • Students raised $3,165.07 for St. Jude Children's Research Hospital through its recent Math-a-Thon.
