Virtual school to host online open house

The virtual S.C. Whitmore School, a new public charter high school, invites families to learn more about its program in an online open house from 7 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday. Project director Ellen Ray will host the event and answer questions about the school, which will open in August.

The school has no semesters, allowing students to work toward a South Carolina high school diploma at their own pace, wherever they have access to the Internet.

Superintendent to have coffee with community

Jasper County School District superintendent Vashti Washington will hold a "Coffee with the Superintendent" event from 9 a.m to 1 p.m. Jan. 22 at the district's central office in Ridgeland. She will meet one-on-one with parents, school district staff and other community members.

Reservations may be scheduled by calling 843-717-1103. Each appointment will last 15 minutes.

Parents invited to class Jan. 24

The Beaufort County School District invites parents to visit their child's school and observe teaching and learning during "Bring Your Parent to School Day" on Jan. 24.

Parents are invited to participate in the routines and activities their children experience every day. Planned activities include using "Everyday Math" manipulatives, trying out interactive whiteboards, working in computer labs, participating in debates and meeting children's classmates.

BATTERY CREEK HIGH SCHOOL

  • The School Improvement Council will meet Thursday in the media center.
  • The SADD Club is collecting the fronts of Christmas Cards for the St. Jude's Ranch for Children. Cards can be left in the front office with Mrs. Grooms.
  • The SADD Club meets Tuesdays after school in the media center during January.
  • The SADD Club is registered as a partner in the National Souper Bowl of Caring program. The club's goal is to collect 300 cans of soup by Super Bowl Sunday on Feb. 6. Cans should be left with Mrs. Grooms in the front office.
  • A PTSO meeting will be at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 27 in the John J. McVey Performing Arts Center.
  • BEAUFORT ACADEMY

  • This week is Spirit Week. Activities include dress-up days with banners, themes and skits by students in grades eight through 11. The seniors are in charge of the pep rally.
  • The 2011 Homecoming Queen will be crowned during the boys basketball game Thursday. The 2010 queen, Mary Beth Mitchel, will pass the honors to the next queen.
  • Hargray will be recongized for donating warm-ups and uniforms to the varsity girls basketball team during a home game Thursday.
  • BEAUFORT COUNTY SCHOOL DISTRICT

  • The district's second annual winter Science, Technology, Engineering and Math Showcase will be from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday at Lady's Island Middle School. Parents and community members can view STEM projects from students at Lady's Island Intermediate and Middle School, the AMES Academy, Whale Branch Middle School and St. Helena Elementary School.
  • BEAUFORT HIGH SCHOOL

  • Midterm exams will be today through Friday.
  • CAPA block parties will be Jan. 18-20.

  • The BMS School Improvement Council will meet at 5:30 p.m. Jan. 24 in the library media center.

  • Second-grade swim lessons will be today through Thursday.

  • A home basketball game will be at 5 p.m. Wednesday.

  • ST. PETER CATHOLIC SCHOOL

  • The newly formed National Junior Beta Club welcomed students into the organization before Christmas break: Prescott Hendrick, president; Laura Barras, vice president; Kelcie Schulze, secretary and treasurer; Hannah Shannon, Olivia Trpcic, Hannah Ramsey, Bethany Johnson, John Inglis, Tim Feltner, Brooks Denman, Mary M.   • The school received $1,640.30 from Box Tops for Education.
  • The second quarter ends Tuesday. Report cards will be distributed Friday.
