A local man was stabbed in the leg last week at a Hilton Head Island apartment complex and stumbled nearly a mile before Beaufort County sheriff’s deputy found him in a shopping center parking lot on Pope Avenue.
The man was found late Aug. 11 with “heavy bleeding coming (down) the middle, back and side of his left leg,” according to a police report released Friday.
After being taken to Hilton Head Hospital, the man, who spoke only Spanish, told deputies through an interpreter that he was “involved in a dispute with his brother-in-law” in the stairwell area of a Woodhaven Drive apartment complex.
The dispute escalated when man’s brother-in-law “went after him with a shovel,” striking him “about two or three times” in the arms and chest, the report said.
The attacker then “pull(ed) out a large knife” and stabbed the man behind the left knee, the report said.
At the hospital, the man went back and forth as to whether he wanted to press charges — “he seemed unsure,” the report said.
Deputies photographed the man’s injuries that evening.
On Thursday, the case was assigned to Sheriff’s Office investigators, the report said.
