$50,000 bond set for driver charged in fatal Hilton Head bike crash

The Hilton Head man charged in connection to the death of a Hilton Head bicyclist appeared in Beaufort County Court Friday where his bond was set at $50,000.

Richard George Alford, 64, was charged with felony driving under the influence and leaving the scene of an accident resulting in death after his vehicle allegedly ran into the right shoulder of the eastbound lane on the Cross Island Parkway around 5:45 p.m. on Thursday, according to Lance Cpl. Matthew Southern of the S.C. Highway Patrol. The accident occcurred near Marshland Road.

The 2011 Ford pickup truck he drove struck and killed Jeffrey Garske, 66, of Hilton Head, Southern said.

According to Beaufort County Court records, a man with the same name as Alford was charged with transporting alcohol in a motor vehicle with the seal broken in August of 1992. He was also charged with reckless operation of a water device in June of 2012; he pleaded guilty to that charge.

Alford remains in the Beaufort County Detention Center.
