St. Helena man shot to death; gunman still at large

A St. Helena man died Sunday night after he was shot multiple times as he sat in the driver’s seat of his vehicle.

Marquise Singleton, 21, was pronounced dead at Beaufort Memorial Hospital after a passing motorist found him unresponsive on Sam Doyle Road around 10:45 p.m., according to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office report.

The motorist removed Singleton from the vehicle and began CPR until EMS arrived and took Singleton to the hospital.

Evidence recovered from the road led Sheriff’s Office investigators to believe the shooting happened a short distance from where Singleton was found in his vehicle. The shooter remains at large and it is unknown whether the perpetrator ran away or fled in a vehicle, the release said.

A forensic autopsy is underway at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston.

Anyone with information about the incident can contact Sgt. Angela Crumpton at 843-255-3707 or Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CrimeSC.
