Visitors drove their Jeep on the beach, and it caught fire

While driving on Singleton Beach about 1:45 a.m. Saturday, three young visitors from Tennessee caused a fire, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.

The four-door Jeep Wrangler caught fire and was “completely engulfed in flames,” according to Capt. Bob Bromage. He said the report indicated the three friends appeared to be intoxicated at the time.

The fire spread from the vehicle to some nearby sea oats, which are protected on Hilton Head Island.

Town of Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue responded and called for the Sheriff’s Office to assist.

The 23-year-old man who was driving was arrested. He was released from the Beaufort County Detention Center on Saturday afternoon. He faces tickets, misdemeanors, for driving on the beach and for destroying sea oats.
