Highway Patrol: Three vehicles struck, killed Okatie bicyclist

An Okatie man riding a bicycle on S.C. 170 on Friday night was struck and killed by three vehicles, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol.

Stanley Morton, 45, died at the scene near River’s End Road in Okatie around 11 p.m., according to Lance Cpl. Matthew Southern of the S.C. Highway Patrol and Beaufort County Coroner Ed Allen.

Southern said two unknown vehicles and one known vehicle are being investigated in connection to the incident.

No descriptions of those vehicles have been released, as the investigation is ongoing.

The driver of the known vehicle involved in Morton’s death has not been charged at this time, Southern said.

The hit-and-run remains under investigation by the Highway Patrol’s Multi-disciplinary Accident Investigation Team, Southern said.

News of the incident was not made available by the Highway Patrol until Monday afternoon.

When asked by an Island Packet reporter why the information was not released, Southern declined to comment.

Morton’s death came nearly a week after Grace Sulak, 14, of Bluffton, was killed in a hit-and-run crash in Calhoun County on eastbound I-26 as she rode in a car with Andrea and Emma Dewey May 7.

The offender’s vehicle has been described as a white Dodge Ram 2500 pickup with possible damage to the right front fender, according to Sgt. Bob Beres of the Highway Patrol. Anyone with information can call the patrol at 843-953-6010 or Crime Stoppers at 1-888-CrimeSC.
