Teen dies from injuries in Hilton Head Island shooting
A 17-year-old Hilton Head Island woman who suffered a gunshot wound to the head early Wednesday has died, the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office said.
The woman was taken to Memorial Health University Medical Center for emergency treatment after the 4 a.m. shooting at a home on Wild Horse Road, but succumbed to her injuries around 4:45 p.m. Thursday, the Sheriff's Office said.
The details of the shooting have not been determined. The Sheriff's Office has turned over "numerous items of evidence" to its Forensic Services Laboratory. It also reported that SLED would likely aid in the examination of the evidence.
Investigators recovered the handgun used in the shooting and have been interviewing witnesses and the woman's family and acquaintances. There have been no criminal charges, the Sheriff's Office said.
The investigation could take several weeks.
