Girl riding bicycle struck by pickup on Hilton Head Island

An 11-year-old girl riding a bicycle was struck by a pickup truck on Hilton Head Island Saturday morning, officials say.

First responders with the Hilton Head Island Fire & Rescue Division responded to the scene near Publix at 11 Palmetto Bay Road shortly after 10 a.m., said division spokeswoman Joheida Fister.

The girl was crossing Palmetto Bay Road when she was struck by the truck traveling northbound and pulling a trailer, said Sgt. Bob Beres with the S.C. Highway Patrol.

The girl had been riding with another girl who told her to stop when the two approached the road, Beres said.

The child was airlifted from Hilton Head Airport to Savannah Memorial Hospital, he said.

The child’s condition was unknown as of Saturday afternoon.
