A child with a wound consistent with a shark bite was airlifted to an area hospital Friday after an incident on Shipyard Beach on Hilton Head Island.
The incident happened around 4:20 p.m. at the Shipyard Beach Club, according to Mike Wagner, operations manager for Hilton Head Island Shore Beach Services.
The victim was a girl about 10 to 12-years-old, Wagner said, and had a "pretty extensive" wound on one of her arms.
When asked by The Island Packet and Beaufort Gazette if the wound was caused by a shark, Wagner said "we never can know for sure, but indications would say it was."

Wagner said no one reported seeing a shark, including the child.
She was treated on scene by the Hilton Head Fire & Rescue Division and flown to a nearby hospital, according to spokeswoman Joheida Fister.
Fister said the wound was a laceration and could not say what caused it.
Fister declined release the condition of the child Monday or the hospital she was flown to.
The beach was cleared immediately following the incident, Wagner said.
