A Beaufort man was charged with drug possession early Sunday after officers searched his car and found crack, cocaine and marijuana, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.
A deputy patrolling the water treatment plant on Snake Road just after midnight noticed a vehicle occupied by three people parked in front of the plant, Sgt. Robin McIntosh said. The occupants said they stopped because the driver, 31-year-old Chavis Mathis, was tired and wanted to switch with a passenger, according to an incident report.
Deputies discovered that Beaufort police had a warrant for Mathis' arrest on a charge of fleeing to evade law enforcement, the report said. A search of the car revealed drugs, which Mathis said were his, according to McIntosh.
He was charged with possession with intent to distribute crack and cocaine, and simple possession of marijuana. He was released Monday from the Beaufort County Detention Center after posting a $21,090 bond.
