Beaufort man held on cocaine, gun charges

A Beaufort man was charged with possession of cocaine with intent to distribute and unlawfully carrying a pistol Wednesday, according to the Beaufort Police Department.

John Dontue Priester, 21, was in the Beaufort County Detention Center on Thursday afternoon, with bail set at $65,262.

Police arrived before noon at Live Oaks Apartments after a call from a woman who said two men showed up at her door claiming her boyfriend owed them $25. The boyfriend went outside, then returned and said the men had a gun.

Authorities stopped the car the men were in as it was leaving the apartments. An officer found a pistol on the driver's side floorboard by Priester's feet, according to police.

About 5 grams of cocaine were found in a small bag in his hat, authorities say. Both the driver and a passenger had open beers. The passenger was also charged with having an open container.
