Assault, robbery suspect turned into Beaufort County Sheriff's Office by brother

A man accused of bashing his roommate's head early Tuesday morning when the roommate wouldn't lend his car was arrested Tuesday night after the suspect's brother reported him to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

William Harold Dunbar, 36, was arrested on a charge of high and aggravated battery and assault and a charge of strong-arm robbery. He was being held at the Beaufort County Detention Center on Wednesday in lieu of $100,000 bond, according to the jail log.

About 12:15 a.m. Tuesday, deputies found a 68-year-old man bleeding from his head at a home in Bon Aire Estates, according to the Sheriff's Office. The man said his roommate hit him with an iron object when he refused to give the roommate the keys to his car. The roommate took cash off the victim's dresser and fled.

According to the Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to the Econo Lodge, 2227 Boundary St., at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday after receiving an anonymous call that the armed robbery suspect was staying there.

The suspect's brother told them Dunbar had just left to walk to the store, according to the Sheriff's Office. Deputies found him behind Enmark, and he unsuccessfully attempted to flee across Boundary Street toward the marsh.

The brother said Dunbar contacted him Tuesday evening and said he needed a place to stay, and he would pay cash if his brother would rent him a room at the Econo Lodge.
