Motorcyclist airlifted to hospital after weekend crash on Hilton Head, police say
A motorcyclist was airlifted to Savannah in critical condition after a Saturday evening collision on north-end Hilton Head Island, according to police.
Beaufort County deputies responded to Wild Horse Road shortly after 7 p.m. Saturday to find Hilton Head fire crews giving medical assistance to a motorcyclist “lying in the middle of the roadway,” a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office incident report says.
After speaking with witnesses, police determined the man “was driving his motorcycle recklessly” and struck the vehicle in front of him, resulting in “life-threatening injuries,” the report says.
EMS crews took the motorcyclist to the Hilton Head Island Airport, where he was airlifted to Memorial Health University Medical Center. The South Carolina Highway Patrol assumed control of the investigation, according to the police report. An agency spokesperson did not immediately have an update on the motorcyclist’s condition Monday afternoon.
First responders blocked an approximately quarter-mile portion of Wild Horse Road between Bligen Lane and Weaver Common as they responded to the collision, according to a sheriff’s office alert.
