Shots fired on Tybee during event with ‘hundreds of people,’ police say
Gunfire was heard during a large event near the Tybee Island pier Saturday evening, the Tybee Island Police Department said in a social media post.
The shots were reported during an “unpermitted, pop-up event involving hundreds of people around the pier and pavilion,” police said.
The event began around 6:30 p.m., according to the post. Police said officers heard an “undetermined number of shots fired” during the event, but did not specify what time.
The statement was posted to the Tybee Island Police Department’s Facebook account at approximately 10:47 p.m.
A number of off-duty officers responded to the island after being notified of the incident. Officers with the Chatham County Police Department, Chatham County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia State Patrol also responded to the scene.
The event “effectively dispersed,” police said.
Police have not located a suspect, and no victims have come forward, the statement said.
The name of the event was not confirmed by police. Passers-by may notice a “large police presence” in the area during the investigation, which is still active, police said.
Sunday update
At 8:11 a.m. on Sunday, TIPD shared on Facebook that the department is continuing to investigate the circumstances. Police have still not identified a suspect and no victims have come forward.
“As horrible as this situation was, we are hopeful that this means no one was seriously injured,” police said in the statement.
