Mysterious discovery: Beaufort woman’s body found on St. Helena dirt road Wednesday
Police responded to St. Helena Island in large numbers after a resident found a woman’s body on a dirt road Wednesday morning. The investigation into the death was ongoing and had not yet been linked to an existing case, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies received the call about the body around 9:15 a.m. Wednesday, according to sheriff’s office spokesperson Master Sgt. Danny Allen. The corpse was located “on the side” of Langford Road, a dirt road connecting Seaside Road and U.S. 21 on the eastern end of St. Helena.
The deceased woman was identified as 33-year-old Beaufort resident Stephanie Campbell, according to Beaufort County Coroner David Ott. Any details on her body’s condition or cause of death would be withheld until her autopsy was completed Wednesday afternoon.
On-scene photos from WSAV News 3 show patrol vehicles blocking off the central portion of the dirt road. Allen said the scene had been cleared as of 2:45 p.m. Wednesday.
Anyone with information regarding this case is encouraged to call the lead investigator, Staff Sgt. Tunis, at 843-255-3426 or online at bcso.net, the sheriff’s office said in an alert sent Wednesday afternoon.
