Sadie Bentz had never taken a photography class in her life but still managed to win first place for the high school division of a local photography contest.
The 15-year-old Bluffton resident submitted two photos for the Bluffton library's Teen Photography Contest, which was open to middle and high school students in Beaufort County.
Although Sadie said she was never really interested in photography prior to the contest, when she heard about it she thought it would be fun to take some photos at the beach and submit them. She sent in a photo of a shrimp boat and another of the inside of a pier at Mitchelville Beach on Hilton Head Island. The latter photo won her the first-place title and a $100 Visa gift card.
"I was very excited," Sadie said. "I was surprised because I didn't think I would win something like that."

Bluffton library Children's Services manager Jean Morgan said the library's Teen Advisory Board sponsored the contest as a way of getting teens involved at the library. Students were asked to submit up to three photos, which had to be taken between May 15 and July 16. The library received about 25 entries.Photos had to fit the theme of "Summertime in Beaufort County" and were judged by Corky Burt and Chuck Thomas of the Sun City Photography Club.
Photos were judged on technical quality, artistic merit, creativity and overall relation to the theme.
