Lowcountry events commemorate 10-year anniversary of Sept. 11

Lowcountry residents will never forget 9/11 and are planning a variety events to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks. To remember the heroes of that day and those who continue to serve, events including concerts, special prayers, moments of silence and a military flyover are planned. Upcoming events include:


  • Okatie Elementary School students will hold a "We Remember 9/11" ceremony from 9-9:30 a.m. Details: 843-322-7700
  • Michael C. Riley Elementary School student council will sponsor a commemorative assembly at 9:30 a.m. in the Flag Court Garden. Details: 843-706-8300
  • Broad River Elementary School is hosting a 9/11 ceremony at 10 a.m. Details: 843-322-8400
  • Beaufort Academy will have several events today to commemorate the 10th anniversary of 9/11, including a display of 3,000 flags in honor of those who died in the terrorist attacks. Details: 843-524-3393

  • A Bluffton Block Party will be held noon-5 p.m. at Buckwalter Place in Bluffton. The event will celebrate American pride and spirit. Proceeds will benefit Operation R&R. There will be food, live music and an honor guard presentation by the Bluffton Police Department and Bluffton Township Fire District. Cost is $5; active duty military, police, fire and rescue workers and their families are free with identification. Tickets for a VIP tent sponsored by Hargray cost $100 and may be purchased at State Farm in Buckwalter Place between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday or by calling 843-837-2886.   • Indigo Pines Retirement Community on Hilton Head Island is holding an Open House Celebrating Heroism. There will be Veterans Affairs Aid and Attendance programs at 10 a.m. and 6:30 p.m., and local artist Jocelyn Mims will be painting a special patriotic portrait from 2-3:30 p.m. All sailors, soldiers, veterans, fire, police and rescue personnel are invited from 10 a.m.-5 p.m. to receive a special "Thank You" goodie bag.   • Hilton Head Island Elks, Lodge 2773, will hold an observance ceremony at 5 p.m. to honor and respect those who sacrificed and lost their lives on Sept. 11, 2001. Speakers from the community who would like to share their memories and testimonies are asked to contact the Patriots' Day event chairman, Tiger Fulkert, at 843-683-9858. After the service, a chicken dinner will be served for $12 with a portion of the proceeds to be donated to the local firefighters. The lodge is at 173 Marshland Road, Hilton Head Island.

  • The City of Beaufort and area churches are working in partnership for a day of remembrance commemorating 9/11 today in Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park in Beaufort. Civic commemorations begin at 8:30 a.m. State and local first responders will be recognized and several local musical groups will perform. The civic commemorations will conclude at 9:58 a.m., the time when United Airlines Flight 93 lost contact, with a United States Marine Corps Flyover. A service of worship and remembrance, organized by multiple area churches, begins at 10:30 a.m. in the park. The service will include a community choir; Richard Sale, FBI chaplain, will share a message; and the churches will recognize Beaufort's first responders. The event is free and open to the community.   • The town of Bluffton will hold its third annual 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at 8:30 a.m. at Bluffton Town Hall. The ceremony will feature Bluffton resident Staff Sgt. Jeff Fulgham speaking about what 9/11 meant for him as he served his country with combat tours in Iraq and Afghanistan. Fulgham was the recipient of the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart for his actions in Afghanistan. Details: 843-706-4500
  • Sun City Hilton Head will hold a 9/11 Memorial Service at 8:30 a.m. in the Sun City Town Square in front of the Purrysburg Fitness Center, near the 9/11 Memorial. Larry Bonner, commander of the Sun City Veteran's Association, and resident Rhoda Kantor will act as masters of ceremonies. Five branches of the military, the fire department and sheriff's office as well as the K-9 department will be represented. There will be color guards and the Army Brass Quintet. Larry Della Vecchia, a Sun City veteran, will ring a bell four times throughout the ceremony to recognize and give a moment of silence for each plane that went down that day.   • The FDNY Retirees of The Lowcountry will hold a remembrance/memorial service to uphold the meaning of "Never Forget" at 9:30 a.m. on the dock immediately behind Chart House Restaurant (formerly Charlie's Crab) on Hilton Head Island. All members of the community are invited. Any active or retired members of law enforcement or fire service are requested to wear their uniform as a mark of respect for the deceased.   • North Island Baptist Church will have a special service of commemoration of the anniversary of Sept. 11, "Never Forget ... Hope," at 10:30 a.m. . Local heroes are invited.   • First Christian Church of Shell Point will hold it's second 9/11 Memorial Service at 11 a.m. Local firefighter and musician Paul Lazzo will perform with his family members. The public is invited.   • The Hilton Head Choral Society will present a musical tribute to the victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, "Songs of Consolation and Hope -- A 9/11 Tribute," at 8 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church, 540 William Hilton Parkway, Hilton Head Island. The performance will feature 100 chorus members with orchestra accompaniment. Members of the Town of Hilton Head Island Fire & Rescue Division will be recognized, and Hilton Head Island Mayor Drew Laughlin will make a special presentation.   • "A Concert of Remembrance," begins at 3 p.m. at St. Francis By the Sea Catholic Church. The concert will feature the Hilton Head Festival Chorus and Orchestra and the Chancel Choir of Bethany United Methodist Church in Summerville.   • In support of the Independence Fund's Lt. Dan Weekend 2, the Fripp Island Independence Fund will commemorate the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11 with a memorial gathering from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Proceeds will benefit the severely wounded veterans who have shouldered the response to those attacks. A $30 donation entitles guests to an assortment of appetizers and desserts, live music, speakers from the 82nd Airborne, and silent and live auctions. The event takes place in the Ocean View Lounge in the Fripp Island Beach Club. A cash bar will be available. Fripp Island residents and non-residents are invited.   • Lt. Dan Weekend 2 will salute 9/11 firefighters during the City of Beaufort's 300th anniversary parade beginning at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 17 downtown Beaufort. Parade Grand Marshall Gary Sinise, who played Lt. Dan in "Forrest Gump," will share his ride with two Medal of Honor recipients, Jay Vargas and Drew Dix.
