Firefighter Derrick Washington is among the top five finalists in a contest to name the nation’s outstanding volunteer firefighters.
Washington — known as “Big D” — has been with Beaufort-Port Royal Fire Department for nearly 15 years and has repeatedly gone above and beyond what is required of him, local fire officials say.
The department nominated him for the contest in which people can vote daily online to show their support.
The contest is sponsored by smoke-detector manufacturer Kidde Fire Safety as part of its “Step Up and Stand Out” initiative to raise awareness of the need for volunteer firefighters. It is a partnership with country music star Craig Morgan (a former first responder), Firehouse.com, the International Association of Fire Chiefs, the National Fire Protection Association and the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation.
