A Hardeeville man was charged with murder Tuesday after law enforcement found his girlfriend’s body beneath a pile of blankets in the home they shared.
Jasper County Coroner Martin Sauls III identified the victim as Mary Cruz Sotello Casillo, 25, on Wednesday.
Samuel Olalde Gonzalez, 24, was charged with Casillo’s murder after the Bluffton Police Department informed the Hardeeville Police Department around 10:30 a.m. Monday about a possible death in Jasper County, according to a Jasper County Sheriff’s Office news release.
Hardeeville Police met with a friend of Gonzalez, who told investigators Gonzalez said he was not going to work because of family issues.
The friend requested a welfare check at Gonzalez’s residence at 560 Honey Hill Road in Hardeeville.
Gonzalez was immediately held at the front door of the residence, and officers from both the police department and the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office found Casillo covered in several blankets on the living room couch, the release said.
Three small children between the ages of 4 months to 5-years-old were also at the home.
The Sheriff’s Office suspects the woman was strangled, the release said, but Sauls said he could not confirm Casillo’s cause of death until an autopsy is completed on Wednesday.
Chief Deputy Roy Hughes of the Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday that no other information about the Casillo’s death will be released now due to the ongoing investigation.
Gonzalez was taken to the Detective Division of the Sheriff’s Office to be interviewed and is being held at the Jasper County Detention Center.
