Beaufort's Taco Bell will likely get a makeover and new location.
A permit for the work and move is expected to be issued this week to build a 2,500 square-foot building with a drive-through on an outparcel in front of Lowe's on Robert Smalls Parkway.
The new eatery will replace one located in Beaufort Plaza off Robert Smalls.
The project first went before the Beaufort Design Review Board in December, shortly after the parcel was zoned highway commercial to allow drive-throughs.
Before approval, planning staff asked that the orientation move so that the drive-through window is in the back of the building, out of view from Robert Smalls, and that Lowcountry materials be incorporated.
An oyster-shell stucco will be used on the front and around the base of the building.
Allison RamseyArchitects worked on the project for owner Billy Baker.
"I think the building turned out well," said Lauren Kelly, the city's project development planner.
The building plan includes the removal of three live oaks. A certified arborist told the design board the trees should be staked out to determine whether they can be saved.
