Penn Center will celebrate the 150th anniversary of the founding of its precursor, the Penn School, by partnering with S.C. State University to host a civil-rights symposium Friday and Saturday on the center's St. Helena Island campus.
Veterans of the civil rights movements of the 1960s and contemporary leaders will lecture, and civil rights films will be shown as part of a series by the Gilda Lehrman Foundation and National Endowment for the Humanities.
The symposium is sponsored by S.C. State's I.P. Stanback Museum and Planetarium, the College of Charleston, the Algebra Project, and the St. Helena Island library.
The series of events and films will be free. For a full schedule, call Victoria Smalls at 843-838-2432.
