Master modeler Dennis Cannady is building a three-dimensional diorama of Fort Fremont and will speak at 6 p.m. Nov. 14 at Port Royal Union Church.
Cannady's diorama will show the Spanish-American fort on St. Helena Island as it looked when it was an active military installation, according to a news release from the Friends of Fort Fremont. The nonprofit group and Beaufort County are working to open a welcome center at the former fort, the release said.
Built in 1889 and active until 1921, the fort is listed in the National Register of Historical Places. In 2004, Beaufort County bought 15 acres of the fort's land through the Rural and Critical Lands program.
