The death of a woman whose body was found in a Hilton Head Island condominium Thursday is being investigated by the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.
The Sheriff's Office was called to St. Andrews Common at 20 Queens Folly Road to assist Palmetto Dunes security in conducting a health and welfare check, a news release said.
The body of Rebecca Melton, 55, of Hilton Head Island was found inside condo 1847, Beaufort County Deputy Coroner David Ott said.
It was not clear when deputies conducted the welfare check, though two tourists staying in a nearby condo said at about 4 p.m. that officers had been on the scene since at least 9:30 a.m.
Ott declined to say how long Melton had been dead, and the cause of death was undetermined. An autopsy will be conducted at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, Ott said.
Investigators remained on the scene collecting evidence and conducting interviews after 5 p.m. They declined to provide details or say whether the death was suspicious, citing the ongoing investigation.
