Heat indexes approaching 100 degrees and mechanical breakdowns slowed Waste Pro's trash collections Tuesday in parts of Beaufort, but routes were expected to be completed later in the evening, city leaders said Tuesday afternoon.
Any garbage that was supposed to have been picked up on a Tuesday route and still on the curbside will be collected first thing Wednesday morning, Isiah Smalls, director of public works and facilities management for Beaufort, said in a news release late Tuesday.
“The Waste Pro crews are going to work late into tonight trying to catch up,” Smalls said. “They had some mechanical breakdowns and the crews had to take precautions because of the high heat index. We are all working together, as quickly as possible, to catch up with the scheduled routes for today and Wednesday.”
Any Beaufort resident whose trash was scheduled for collection Tuesday but wasn’t picked up should contact Waste Pro at 843-645-4100 or the city of Beaufort Public Works at 843-525-7054, extension 1.
