Update, July 26: The Beaufort concert originally scheduled Sept. 14 has been canceled. Candice Glover will perform in southern Beaufort County that week, though. For details on that performance and more information on the cancellation, click here.
"American Idol" and St. Helena Island native Candice Glover will return to Beaufort Sept. 14 for her first hometown concert since winning the national TV contest in May.
J.W. Rone, executive director of ARTworks, said the Glover concert prompted the nonprofit arts organization to reschedule a Port Royal Street Music concert slated for the same day.
Glover is touring the country with other 2013 finalists for the American Idol Live tour. The last scheduled performance is Aug. 31.
Glover's Twitter account, @CandiceGlover, retweeted the announcement of the Sept. 14 concert on Wednesday. Attempts Wednesday to reach the Glover family were unsuccessful.
Glover last performed in Beaufort on May 4 as an "Idol" finalist. Her concert drew thousands downtown, where "Idol" crews gathered footage that aired on the show.
Details are scarce about the September concert -- a time and location have not been set. The Beaufort Regional Chamber of Commerce is arranging the show, spokeswoman Jaime Dailey-Vergara said.
"It's basically a way to tell her we're really proud of her and for everyone to welcome her home because when she's been home there hasn't been a real formal welcome," she said.
The chamber has been talking with Glover's mother, Carole, about the show. Unlike the earlier concert, this one will not be arranged in conjunction with "American Idol."
That concert was held on Bay Street, though the Henry C. Chambers Waterfront Park and Beaufort High School stadium also were considered.
Dailey-Vergara said the chamber has not picked a location for the upcoming show.
"We're really just brainstorming and trying to come up with a good plan," she said.
The May concert cost the chamber about $38,000. The bill was paid with donations and accommodation tax grant money. The city of Beaufort, town of Port Royal and Beaufort County donated a combined $20,000 in emergency services. Volunteer labor saved at least another $5,000, organizers estimated.
Dailey-Vergara said this concert will probably cost less, but the chamber has not decided how to pay for it.
"We're not sure if it will be free; that's a definite possibility, but we have to cover our costs," she said.
Beaufort Mayor Billy Keyserling, who has been a supporter of Glover, said he knew about plans for her to do a return concert but had not been filled in on details.
"I think it's wonderful," he said. "I think we've all been waiting for it, waiting patiently, because we know she has other obligations with American Idol."
Keyserling said "town is going to go nuts" over the news of a homecoming concert.
