Hemingways in downtown Beaufort held a fundraiser Sunday to help Laura Carney, a daytime bartender at Luther's Rare and Well Done, after an accident left her with third-degree burns on an arm and leg. She was unable to work for a month because of her injuries, and the proceeds from the fundraiser will go toward her medical bills. Thirty-five local businesses contributed to the event, which included a raffle and live music by Day Lady and Ravenel.

"I didn't even really have to ask," said Kanani Robinson, who helped organize the event. "People just gave."

"We've been coming to Luther's for six years," said fundraiser raffle winner Ron Marcell. "After awhile you just sort of become one big family."
