The Beaufort Ospreys are advancing to the second round of the American Legion state baseball playoffs. Just not the way they wanted to.
"We were on the way up to Cheraw and we found out right before we got to Walterboro basically that (Cheraw) had been disqualified," Post 9/207 coach Mike Smith said.
Smith said he doesn't know specifics on why Cheraw was disqualified, but he was disappointed.
"It's no small feat getting an entire team, coaches, players, parents, bus drivers, everything headed in one direction," Smith said. "The most disappointing thing to me, I told the players and you could see the looks on their faces. They were like, 'are you kidding me?' They were in that frame of mind. They wanted to play baseball. It was a total shock."

The Ospreys (11-5) will now wait for the winner of the series between Florence and Moncks Corner. Barring inclement weather, Beaufort would next play on Monday.
"It's not the way I wanted to win. I wanted to win it on the field. Not that way," Smith said. "It takes a whole week of ball away from us."
Smith said the Ospreys, who may lose a couple of players to family vacations, will practice the rest of the week.
"We'll take stock and see where we go from here," Smith said. "As long as we've got 10 or 12 players that stay committed, we'll stick with it. But if the numbers drop below that, we'll have to look at where we're at."
