A St. Helena Island man is behind bars after skipping out on bond for failing to register as a sex offender, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.

Derrick Jermaine Shipman, 39, was charged with failing to register as a sex offender Tuesday and is being held for prosecution at the Beaufort County Detention Center, with bond set at $50,000, according to the jail log.

Shipman was convicted of criminal sexual conduct with a minor in 1995 and was arrested for failing to register as a sex offender in October 2011, Sgt. Robin McIntosh said.

Shipman was released on bond at that time, and the Sheriff's Office received information that he had moved to North Carolina, McIntosh said.

While in North Carolina, Shipman was arrested on unrelated charges. His name was then entered into the National Crime Information Center database for a second charge of failure to register as a sex offender.

About three weeks ago, the U.S. Marshals Service confirmed Shipman was in North Carolina, and he was extradited Tuesday to Beaufort County.
